How do I change my home page?

 GO BACK    PRINT

Your "home page," the page that appears when you start up your web browser, is often set to a company, school or Internet Service Provider's web page. But it's very easy to change your home page, as long as the computer in question belongs to you. The instructions are slightly different for the various major web browsers:

Internet Explorer for Windows

1. Browse normally to the web page you want as your home page.
2. Pull down the "Tools" menu of Internet Explorer.
3. Select "Internet Options."
4. The "General" tab appears.
5. You'll see the "Home page" box at the top.
6. Click the "Use Current" button in that box.
7. Click "OK."
8. Close and open Internet Explorer. You should see your new home page.

Firefox for any operating system
Changing your home page in Firefox is easy. Just follow these steps:

1. Browse normally to the web page you want as your home page.
2. Pull down the "Tools" menu of Firefox.
3. Select "Options."
4. Click on the "General" tab, if it is not the first to appear.
5. You'll see the "Home Page" box at the top.
6. Click the "Use Current Page" button in that box.
7. Click "OK."
8. Close and open Firefox. You should see your new home page.

Safari for MacOS X
Changing your home page in Safari isn't tough either:

1. Browse normally to the web page you want as your home page.
2. Pull down the "Safari" menu.
3. Select "Preferences."
4. Click on the "General" tab.
5. Note the "Home page:" field and the "Set to Current Page" button beneath it.
6. Click "Set to Current Page."
7. Click the red "close" button in the upper left corner of the preferences dialog.
8. Close and open Safari. You should see your new home page.

Opera
Opera changes the home page in pretty much the same way as the rest:

1. Browse normally to the web page you want as your home page.
2. Pull down the "Tools" menu.
3. Select "Preferences..."
4. The "Preferences" dialog box appears. Click on the "General" tab.
5. Note the "Home page" field and the "Use Current" button to the right of it.
6. Click "Use Current."
7. Click "OK."

Special Opera note:
By default, Opera doesn't load your home page when you start it up. Opera comes to the same pages you were looking at when you shut down your computer last.

The home page is loaded only if Opera crashes or you close all of your Opera windows intentionally before restarting. If you wish to change this behavior, change the selection in the "Startup" menu at the top of the "General" tab to "Start with home page."

Other Browsers
Other browsers offer a similarly friendly way to change the home page. In a few cases, you may need to copy and paste the URL of the current page from the address bar at the top of your browser window into a "home page" field in your browser's options. In others, you can simply drag the icon to the left of the URL to the "home" icon in the toolbar.
